Nimiq is a non-profit, open-source project, founded by a few, developed by many, and owned by all. It is a decentralized payment system built on a unique blockchain. Nimiq develops innovative, user-friendly software designed to help humanity transition to the next generation of finance: a sustainable monetary system where individuals have full control over their money, can use it globally, and benefit from it to achieve financial freedom.
In recent years, Nimiq has focused on building an accessible, decentralized payment ecosystem that aligns with market needs and the project’s core values.
After four years of hard work, Nimiq has begun the migration of its blockchain from a “Proof of Work” (PoW) consensus algorithm to “Proof of Stake” (PoS). This migration marks the most significant event for the project since its first blockchain was launched. The new chain, powered by the Albatross algorithm—developed by cryptography and mathematics PhDs from the Nimiq team—offers greater scalability and energy efficiency, eliminating the high electricity consumption typical of PoW, making Nimiq’s blockchain more eco-friendly.
Validator registration has already been completed, and NIM holders can participate in pre-staking through their wallets to help ensure a successful migration. To promote pre-staking and encourage the decentralization of the new blockchain, Nimiq has allocated 200 million NIM in staking rewards.
In addition, Nimiq has released the Nimiq Pay app for Android and iOS, allowing for instant NIM payments. Nimiq Pay also leverages MALN (Multi-Asset Lightning Nodes), which, through the use of Atomic Swaps, enable users to pay with NIM anywhere Bitcoin Lightning is accepted. This integration is a major step toward Nimiq’s goal of becoming the most widely accepted cryptocurrency globally.
The project has also launched tools such as CryptoPayment Link, which facilitates frictionless decentralized payments, and the Crypto Map, which helps users find merchants that accept cryptocurrencies while giving businesses increased visibility. With these solutions, Nimiq continues to advance its vision of making cryptocurrency payments accessible to everyone. Nimiq has always actively supported the blockchain industry in Costa Rica and globally. It is also one of the first official sponsors of TicoBlockchain 2025, organized by Blockchain Association Costa Rica, the most important blockchain event in Costa Rica.
